Catching up on some Braids info last couple of days. I already knew their newest album was dropping next Tuesday (Flemish Eye), but what I didn’t know is that keyboardist Katie Lee has left the band, sometime during the recording process by the sounds of it. The band self-produced the release in Montreal, and it looks like the band’s dropped the guitars in favor of even more electronic, though again the latter tidbit is information we already knew.
I’m still not sure what that means for how much I’ll like the new album. The couple tracks I’ve heard have been intriguing, and certainly you can still all the immense talent that goes into the songs, both from a writing standpoint as well as musicianship. But I’m not sure it’ll live up to their debut “Native Speaker”. To be fair, though, I’m not sure anything they could do would live up to N/S for me – that album was so raw, so intense, combined so many elements that I love about music, that it may well have been impossible to repeat.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – sophomore albums are a bitch. Fans and critics alike expect a band to evolve and grow, but at the same time stay true to their original sound, but not sound like an exact repeat of the first album. I’m not sure the laws of physics allow all that.
Anyways, you can bet I’ll be buying the album when it comes out. And you can bet I’ll try my damned best to be at their upcoming show here in Edmonton in mid-September. North American tour dates below.
In the meantime, you can stream the album over at Exclaim! using this link.
