So there’s an interesting backstory to this tale of tunes. Avant-garde American poet Alice Notley published a book of poetry in 2007. Now Ariel Engle and Andrew Whiteman (Broken Social Scene, Apostle Of Hustle) have taken said book of poetry, and recorded fourteen songs corresponding to the fourteen poems in the book, using “words from each poem to make faux-folk song forms and then added beats, melodies, and vintage sounds” to create the debut album for AroarA, titled the same as the book.
That might sound odd, but it really really REALLY works. Sort of like Austra, but a little wider ranging. Ariel has this incredible voice, like an angel but a bad-ass angel. Then you add in highly complex layers and instrumentation in each of the tracks. And, well, you just have to take a listen for yourself when you get a chance.
The duo is doing a cross-Canada tour to support the album, of course, including a gig here in Edmonton on September 18th. Definitely worth checking out.
