I’ll admit it, sometimes the monotony gets to you as a music blogger. The endless hours going through email after email, mediocrity seemingly infusing itself into your very core.
But it’s through that tough slogging that sometimes you find the masterpiece bands. The bands that you fall in love with. The bands that you hope make it really big. I mean, sure, if that ever happens, you’ll probably move on, because you’re a music blogger / lover of the underdog and unknowns / but it doesn’t mean you’ll be any less thrilled for them.
Such it is with The Box Tiger, based around the voice and songwriting of Toronto’s Sonia Sturino. The group originally came together in 2009 after meeting through Myspace, though its nucleus has changed a bit since then. Now a trio, with Sonia, Jordan Stowell, and drummer Marcus Cipparrone, they recorded the band’s debut full-length – “Set Fire” – in April 2012, and it is now set to be released on August 6th. They’ve already done a whackage of tour dates, including opening gigs for The Joy Formidable and Frank Turner.
We wish them the best of luck, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the hell out of the video and song above, “Set Fire To Your Friends”. And then when they become big you can all email me and thank me profusely for the heads up. And I’ll say you’re very welcome and shrug my shoulders. Because that’s what I do.
